John Tyler
In 1841 John Tyler became the 10th president of the United States. Tyler, the vice president under President William Henry Harrison, succeeded Harrison to the office of chief executive when Harrison died after only one month in office. As a lawyer, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, governor of Virginia, and president, Tyler consistently supported states’ rights and southern interests.
