Hyman George Rickover
United States naval officer Hyman Rickover pioneered the nuclear-powered navy. He assumed leadership of the Nuclear Power Division of the U.S. Navy in 1947. In that post, he developed the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine. In 1965 Rickover received the Enrico Fermi Medal, the highest honor in the field of nuclear science given in the United States.
