Eddie Rickenbacker was the foremost U.S. ace fighter pilot in World War I. Rickenbacker downed 22 enemy planes and 4 balloons. He became the president of Eastern Airlines in 1939, serving with the company until 1963. While on an inspection mission for the U.S. secretary of war in 1942, he and seven others were forced down in the Pacific several hundred miles north of Samoa Islands. They were rescued after spending 24 days in rubber life rafts.
