Harold II

Harold II
Harold II became king of England in 1066 upon the death of Edward the Confessor, who had recommended the throne be awarded to Harold. William of Normandy, who believed he was the rightful heir to the throne, asserted his claim with an army of 15,000 men. The forces of Harold and William met at the Battle of Hastings. Harold’s defeat and death made William, thereafter known as the Conqueror, the king of England.
