Prior to becoming the 38th president of the United States, Gerald R. Ford had neither been elected vice-president nor president. As House minority leader, he replaced Spiro Agnew as Richard Nixon’s vice-president after Agnew resigned. Ford became president when Nixon resigned as a consequence of the Watergate scandal.
