Sally Ride
Astronaut Sally K. Ride entered orbit on the 1983 Challenger mission, becoming the first American woman in space. Her work on the mission included launching communications satellites and testing the shuttle’s remote manipulator arm. Ride made a second shuttle flight in 1984 and served on the commission established to investigate the Challenger explosion of 1986.
