Stephen Decatur

Stephen Decatur
Through his many successful engagements at sea as an American naval commander, Stephen Decatur became known as one of the most important naval officers in the history of the United States. In 1815, after successfully defeating the pirates in North Africa who had been raiding U.S. shipping vessels, he proposed this famous toast at a banquet given in his honor: “Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be right; but our country, right or wrong!”
