| Bao Dai ruled as the last emperor of the Nguyen dynasty in Vietnam from 1926 to 1945. He was forced to abdicate by the Viet Minh, a Communist guerrilla movement. A few years later, in 1949, the French government proclaimed the Republic of Vietnam with Bao Dai as head of state. In 1954 Vietnam was temporarily divided into north and south zones, and Bao Dai remained head of state in South Vietnam. He was replaced by Ngo Dinh Diem in 1955. |
