Konrad Adenauer

Konrad Adenauer
Imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Nazis for his political opposition to the Third Reich, former lord mayor of Cologne Konrad Adenauer helped form the government of postwar Germany and became the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) in 1949. As chancellor, he led West Germany into membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and campaigned for the establishment of the European Common Market (now called the European Union).
