John Muir
American explorer, naturalist, and writer John Muir was a crusader for the creation and preservation of national parks and the conservation of natural resources in the late 1800s. Muir helped persuade United States President Theodore Roosevelt to set aside nearly 60 million hectares (148 million acres) of forest reserves. In 1908, a redwood forest near San Francisco was named Muir Woods in his honor.
