John Charles Frémont
American explorer and military officer John Charles Frémont explored much of the area between the Rocky Mountains of North America and the Pacific Ocean. He mapped most of the Oregon Trail in 1842, which became the main overland route for westbound settlers. He also served as a United States senator from California and as governor of Arizona. He was the first Republican candidate for president in 1856.
