The Consummation of Empire

The Consummation of Empire
The Consummation of Empire was painted in 1836 by the American artist Thomas Cole. It is the third in a series of five paintings that explores man’s conquest of nature and nature’s ultimate victory. The series was inspired by Cole’s love of the American landscape and the Roman ruins he saw on his travels in Italy. At 127.5 x 190 cm (51 x 76 in), this canvas is the largest of the five.
