Aleutian Islands, Alaska
Attu Island is part of the Aleutian island chain in Alaska. The 150 small islands that make up the Aleutians separate the north Pacific Ocean from the Bering Sea. In June 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces occupied Attu Island until United States forces recaptured it the following year.
