Rapids prevent navigation in sections of the Congo River, but the majority of the river remains passable. With minimal paved roads in the Republic of the Congo, merchants and travelers rely on the river and its tributaries for transportation. As a result, the Congo River system is considered a major transportation network for Central Africa.
