American painter Thomas Hart Benton, born and raised in Missouri, created one of his most powerful murals for the state capitol building in Jefferson City, Missouri. Entitled A Social History of the State of Missouri (1934-1936), it combines depictions of ordinary Americans with illustrations of American folk tales. The section of the mural pictured here illustrates the climactic scene from the “Ballad of Frankie and Johnny,” a 19th-century folk song.
