The Spinners by Velázquez

The Spinners by Velázquez
Spanish artist Diego Velázquez contrasts two scenes in his painting The Spinners (about 1656, Prado, Madrid, Spain). In the foreground is a simple workshop with women in bare feet spinning wool. In the background, elegantly dressed women appear with two figures from mythology, Athena and Arachne. According to fable, Arachne was a weaver so talented that she challenged the goddess Athena. Velázquez's painting is also called The Fable of Arachne.
