Canadian poet and novelist Michael Ondaatje returned to Sri Lanka to write a memoir of his family and childhood there, Running in the Family, in 1982. Throughout the book, he refers to Sri Lanka by its former name, Ceylon. In this passage, Ondaatje recounts how, while he was still in Canada, his return to Sri Lanka began to take hold of his imagination.
