World War II was the most devastating war in human history, causing the loss of an estimated 55 million lives (both military and civilian). It began in 1939 with Nazi Germany’s military aggression in Europe and eventually escalated into a global conflict involving 61 countries. It ended in 1945, leaving a new world order dominated by the United States and the Soviet Union.
