Mary I

Mary I
Mary I became queen of England after the death of her half brother, Edward VI, in 1553. She was the daughter of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragón. She became known as “Bloody Mary” after she burned to death at the stake more than 300 Protestant clergymen during her five-year reign. She had hoped to restore the Roman Catholic Church in England. However she died without children and her Protestant half sister, Elizabeth I, became queen of England in 1558.
