Alfred Jewel

Alfred Jewel
The Alfred Jewel, made of rock crystal and enamel, is one of the most famous surviving objects from Anglo-Saxon England, although its purpose is unknown. The text around the edge of the Alfred Jewel says "AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN", which means "Alfred ordered me to be made." It was found in southwestern England, where Alfred, king of the West Saxons, had been in hiding until he gathered an army to defeat the Danes in 878. The Alfred Jewel is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
