The First Sample of Plutonium
Plutonium was first isolated as an element in the early 1940s by Glenn Seaborg, Edwin McMillan, and their associates at the University of California. To obtain plutonium, the scientists bombarded a sample of uranium with deuterium (heavy hydrogen) atoms in a particle accelerator called a cyclotron. Plutonium was critical for the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort to build an atomic bomb.
