| Originally a Byzantine stronghold, Paphos castle in southwestern Cyprus was rebuilt in the 13th century by the Lusignans. The Venetians could not defend the fort against the Ottoman Turks, who captured Paphos in 1571. The castle was later restored and expanded. The UNESCO list of World Heritage sites includes the town of Paphos and numerous ancient sites nearby. Paphos has noteworthy museums and churches, as well as the so-called Tombs of the Kings, a site dating from the 4th century bc. |
