Cape Sugarbird on King Protea
A Cape sugarbird, Promerops cafer, perches on the open flower of a king protea, Protea cynaroides. The sugarbird may feed on the nectar of 300 proteas a day in autumn and winter. It benefits the plants by transferring pollen from flower to flower, aiding pollination. The female (as shown here) has a long tail, but the male’s tail can be four or five times its body length. Pairs are found where proteas flower on coastal mountains on the South West Cape in South Africa. The bird also uses the down from protea flowers to line its nest.
