In the 1960s Hungarian composer György Ligeti produced several pieces that concentrated on building up textures of sound rather than providing the traditional elements of melody or harmony. These atmospheric pieces, such as the choral work Lux Aeterna, heard here, evoke images of a vast and impersonal landscape. The singers have to listen carefully to each other in order to pitch their notes accurately.
