| Pope Gregory VII’s reforms of religious investiture were curtailed in 1084 when he was seized in the Castel Sant' Angelo fortress in Rome by the troops of the Holy Roman emperor, Henry IV of Germany. The troops went on to pillage Rome. Gregory died in Salerno shortly afterwards, in 1085. Henry IV installed Clement III, who had been made antipope in 1080. In this 13th-century miniature Gregory is pictured in the middle with Henry to the left, then being led away by soldiers, and finally shown in his tomb surrounded by bishops. |
