The third Communist International, or Comintern, was founded in 1919 to promote a world communist revolution on the Russian Communist model. It quickly became a tool of Soviet foreign policy. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin closed it in 1943 as a political concession to his democratic allies during World War II.
