The Cattolica, Calabria

The Cattolica, Calabria
Calabria in southern Italy was once the refuge of Byzantine monks and today is home to numerous buildings designed in the shape of a cross, in the traditional style of Byzantine churches. One of the more notable churches, restored in the 19th century, is the Cattolica, which dominates the town of Stilo in Calabria. The little church, with three apses and five cupolas (domes), is shown here, set against a Mediterranean landscape.
