The port of Narvik in Norway lies north of the Arctic Circle, but the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream keeps the harbor free of ice year-round. Narvik was established in the 1880s to serve the iron ore mines near the city of Kiruna in northern Sweden. Swedish iron ore made Narvik an important strategic point during World War II (1939-1945), and fierce naval engagements between British and German forces took place there in April 1940.
