Bank of England
The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom. Incorporated in 1694, it was a private institution until its nationalization in 1946. In 1997 the bank was made effectively independent of government for the first time. The Bank of England building is regarded as the masterpiece of British architect Sir John Soane. The bank’s nickname is the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, after the street on which it is located.
