Christ Pantocrator
This Byzantine ivory relief shows Christ the Pantocrator, or ruler of the world, raising his hand in a gesture of blessing. It comes from the cover of a lectionary, or book containing portions of the scriptures, and dates from the second golden age of Byzantine art, the late 10th century. The relief is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England.
