| Irish naval officer and explorer Robert McClure navigated most of the Northwest Passage in the 1850s. His ship, the Investigator, was crushed by the ice in August 1851 on the northern shore of Banks Island, as illustrated in this engraving by Lieutenant S. Gurney Creswell, one of McClure’s crew. Forced to abandon the ship, McClure and his crew were rescued and then completed the journey through the Northwest Passage in 1854 in a different ship. |
