Polar explorer Roald Amundsen (bottom row, far left) was the first person to successfully navigate a single ship through the Northwest Passage. The expedition began in 1903 and was completed in 1906. He and his crew are shown here in Nome, Alaska, on the Norwegian ship they used for the voyage.
