André Masson

André Masson
André Masson was a leading figure in the surrealist movement of the 1920s. He experimented with automatism—a technique of drawing and painting without apparent control by the conscious mind. From 1940 to 1945 Masson lived in New York City, where his work influenced American abstract painters of the 1950s. He is seen here in Paris in 1987, the year of his death.
