Austro-Hungarian Ceremony
The Austro-Hungarian Empire, one of the last empires in Europe, was composed of the family holdings of the Habsburg dynasty. The aristocratic ceremonial of its court was famous. This late 19th-century painting shows a ball at the Vienna Hofburg, the town palace of the Habsburg emperors. Emperor Francis Joseph appears, left of center, holding his plumed hat and greeting a lady.
