Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy is an uproarious comic novel that satirizes many of the conventions of society while at the same time plays with the conventions of the novel, a relatively new genre in England at the time. Sterne was a clergyman, but this did not prevent him from taking a vigorous delight in romance and human weakness. Here, Uncle Toby, who has been questioned by the Widow Wagman about his war wound, offers to show her the very place.
