Rudolf of Habsburg
Rudolf of Habsburg was elected king of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor in 1273, founding the Habsburg dynasty. His accession marked the end of the Great Interregnum, a period of 20 years when Germany had no ruler. By wresting the territories of Austria, Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola from Ottokar II of Bohemia, Rudolf laid the foundations of the great Habsburg Empire.
