Akbar, who ruled from 1556 to 1605, is generally considered the founder of India’s Mughal Empire. This watercolor painting was created toward the end of his reign for a manuscript that told of his feats. In the painting Akbar and his entourage are traveling to the eastern parts of his empire. Akbar’s Expedition by Boat to the Eastern Provinces (1602-1604) is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
