Herbert Marcuse

Herbert Marcuse
German-born philosopher Herbert Marcuse was one of the main exponents of critical theory in the Frankfurt School. After World War II (1939-1945) he became an influential theorist of the New Left. In One-Dimensional Man, published in 1964, Marcuse argued that capitalism had suppressed many human sensibilities and capacities. His writings influenced student rebellions of the 1960s.
