Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord was a French statesman and diplomat. He served as Napoleon’s foreign minister, but left the emperor to help restore the French monarchy and the Bourbon kings. Although France had been ravaged by Napoleon’s wars and defeated by Britain and its allies, Talleyrand’s diplomatic skill at the Congress of Vienna helped restore some of his country’s status in Europe.
