Gustav Mahler’s six-movement Symphony No. 3 in D Minor demonstrates the composer’s efforts to interweave the song into the symphony. Mahler expanded the symphonic form through the incorporation of vocal parts in works such as this symphony for orchestra, alto soloist, female chorus, and boys’ chorus.
