| Austrian composer Franz Schubert displayed an enormous musical gift even in childhood. Despite his short life—he died at the age of 31—he left behind an enormous body of music, and his songs in particular place him among the outstanding composers of the 19th century. His talent remained largely unnoticed by all but a few of his Viennese contemporaries, and it was only recognized decades later. | ||||||
