| India developed a number of different writing systems over the course of its history. Bengali, which developed toward the end of the 14th century, belongs to the Indo-Aryan language group. But its writing system is used not only for Bengali, Assamese, and other Indian languages in that group, but also for writing several languages in the Tibeto-Burman language subfamily.
