Mendelian Genetics

Austrian monk Gregor Mendel formulated the hereditary principles by which parents pass physical characteristics to their offspring. He derived these principles through experiments with crossbreeding pea plants that differed in one essential and easily observed trait. He explained the results he obtained and the transmission of the trait in terms of hereditary units. These units later became known as genes.
