Charlemagne, as king of the Franks, had established a vast empire in western and central Europe by the year 800. On Christmas Day of that year Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as emperor of the Romans in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, reviving a tradition of the Western Roman Empire.
