On June 20, 1789, in response to a financial crisis in France, representatives of the common people gathered at a tennis court at Versailles after the king had deprived them of their usual meeting place. They swore not to disband until they had drawn up a new constitution, an event known as the Tennis Court Oath. French artist Jacques-Louis David depicted the event in this painting from 1790-1801 now in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
