Macbeth Sees the Apparitions of Scottish Kings
The tragedy Macbeth (1606) by William Shakespeare was inspired by the story of King Macbeth of Scotland, who came to the throne in 1040 after killing the reigning king, Duncan I. Later Macbeth is tormented by his actions. Told that future kings of Scotland will come from Banquo’s family, Macbeth is haunted by their apparitions, as shown in this oil sketch by 19th-century French painter Théodore Chassériau.
