Monte Rosa
Encyclopedia Article
Monte Rosa, mountain group in the Pennine Alps, located on the Italian-Swiss border. Monte Rosa is a mountain mass consisting of ten named peaks, including the Dufourspitze (4,634 m/15,203 ft), one of the highest peaks in the Alps. On the Swiss side of the Monte Rosa there are several glaciers, among them the Gorner, which has an area of 65 sq km (25 sq mi) and is the second largest glacier in the Alps. On the Italian side, the mountains are cut by deep valleys, the most well known being the Valle di Gressoney and the Val di Sesia. On the west side, the Monte Rosa mountains reach to the Teodule Pass (3,320 m/10,892 ft), and in the east its limit is marked by the Neu Weisstor (3,666 m/12,028 ft). The total area occupied by the Monte Rosas is 260 sq km (100 sq mi).
