Jørgen Ingebretsen Moe (1813-1882), Norwegian bishop, poet, and folk tale collector. Born in Hole, Norway, he entered the University of Oslo in 1830 to study theology, afterwards becoming a pastor and, in 1875, a bishop. Although he wrote verse, he is remembered primarily for his collaboration with the poet Peter Christian Asbjørnsen on the collection Norske Folkeeventyr (Norwegian Folk Tales, 1841), one of the best-loved classics of Norwegian literature and famous even outside of Norway. The two men derived the idea of making such a collection from the German fairy tales of the Grimm brothers.
