Mirabilite, also known as Glauber’s salt, natural hydrous sodium sulfate (see Johann Glauber). Mirabilite is a white mineral that commonly occurs as efflorescent crusts. It is soluble in water and is deposited from saline waters upon evaporation. It is first cool and then bitter to the taste. Mirabilite has been extensively mined in China. It has been marketed as a dyeing agent, food additive, and food preservative.
