The Minch, channel between the mainland of Scotland and the northern and central portion of the Hebrides. The Minch, comprised of North Minch and The Little Minch, varies from 23 to 72 km (14 to 45 mi) in width and has a rapid current. While North Minch is the channel between northwest Scotland and the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, The Little Minch separates the Isle of Skye and the middle portion of the Outer Hebrides from northwest Scotland. On either side of the channel are numerous lochs, or bays, that penetrate far inland.
